A fascinating look into the financial realities of sports betting from our Financial Literacy Colloquium with Nick Grasley, a PhD candidate from Stanford University. He presented his paper, “Do Sports Bettors Need Consumer Protection?” co-authored with Mariana Guido and Matthew Brown. Both Nick and Mariana are on the economics job market this year.

Their research uncovers critical behavioral biases in the rapidly growing sports betting market, where people wager over $100 billion a year. They find a strong bias in betting with important policy implications:

  • Biased Financial Perceptions: Bettors predict they will break even, but data from their field experiment shows an average loss of 7.5 cents per dollar wagered.
  • Policy Implications: Their findings highlight the importance of thoughtfully designed policy to correct these biases, such as educating consumers on the financial implications of sports gambling

This paper is a powerful example of how rigorous research can inform better financial education and consumer protection policy.
