Why We Need to Talk about Money: Financial Literacy in the EU

Our special guest, European Commissioner Mairead McGuinness, shared insights about financial literacy initiatives within the European Union and her vision of financial literacy as a key component of the economic system. Her presentation, "Why we need to talk about money: financial literacy in the EU," took place at Stanford University Graduate School of Business. Participants from different schools across campus, including faculty, PhD and undergraduate students, and alumni, learned firsthand about her work and leadership. 

Ms. McGuinness is the European Commissioner for Financial Services, Financial Stability, and Capital Markets Union. Before joining the Commission in October 2020, she was the First Vice-President of the European Parliament. She served as a Member of the European Parliament from Ireland for 16 years and was a Vice-President of the Parliament since 2014. Some of her responsibilities include leading the work on completing the Banking Union, expediting the work on the Capital Markets Union to diversify sources of finance for companies, and tackling the barriers to the flow of capital. She is also responsible for proposing a FinTech Strategy to support new digital technologies in the European financial system.
